STORY

8% of the profit goes to WILD Nature Foundation

By far the hardest assignment we ever had for the National Geographic Society was documenting these notoriously elusive old-world monkeys. The mandrill is perhaps the most colourful mammal of them all, but this does not mean that they are easy to spot in the forest. Some of the locals believe that mandrills have magical powers and can make themselves invisible. This certainly felt true after spending two months in the gallery forest, only seeing them a few times from our ridiculously small photo hides, and walking the forest in ghillie suits, always being attacked by either minute fire ants or sweat bees, and with the possibility of treading on the highly venomous and camouflaged gaboon viper.
